Mermiss – Environmentally friendly treatment of highly potent pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater

Objectives:

To develop the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology through chemical oxidation to efficiently remove highly potent pharmaceuticals that is present in hospital wastewater.

Environmental experts, Hospitals/health system stakeholders, Scientists, and Water/waste service providers

Area of interest:

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, Wastewater, and Water treatment technologies

Activities:

Investigating treatment of wastewater in three situations:
1) All wastewater from the hospital
2) Wastewater from the Department of Oncology, which is highly polluted
3) Municipal wastewater

Cost assessment of wastewater treatment to find out which is more environmentally and financially efficient.
